2026 NFA Update Updated September 2026

Federal NFA rules changed in 2026.

Effective January 1, 2026, the federal making and transfer tax rate was reduced to $0 for most NFA firearms, including silencers, short-barreled rifles, short-barreled shotguns and certain other weapons. Machineguns and destructive devices remain subject to separate NFA tax treatment.

On August 5, 2026, a federal court in Silencer Shop Foundation v. ATF held that several NFA registration, application and approval requirements for untaxed firearms could not be enforced against the plaintiffs and, where applicable, their members and customers. The injunction is not a universal nationwide exemption and does not eliminate other federal, state or local requirements that may apply.

Freedom Gear products on this page are sold for their stated firearm-cleaning purposes. Nothing on this page represents any product as exempt from federal, state or local law. Customers are responsible for determining which laws and requirements apply to their possession, purchase and use.
